Debian Setup Instructions (post install)

Enable Sudo

Enter root using SU command

apt-get install sudo

Navigate to sudoers file /etc/sudoers and add user to list

EXAMPLE:

# Allow members of group sudo to execute any command
%sudo	ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL
matt    ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

Enable 32bit Architecture:
(required for installing 32 bit packages such as Steam )

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Refresh package index:

sudo apt-get update
______________________________________________________________________________

Find fastest mirrors. ( Optional )

install netselect-apt

sudo apt-get install netselect-apt

Run command: 

netselect-apt

A list of mirrors ranked by speed will be places in your home directory
Copy this list to  /etc/apt/sources.list

Refresh package index:

sudo apt-get update

Enable Contrib and Non-Free packages.

Open Synaptic Package manager, Select settings / repositories

select each item and at the bottom of the Window under "Sections"
Add contrib non-free. EXAMPLE: 

| main contrib non-free |

Repeat for each item. When finished press OK and then refresh 
the package index by pressing the Reload button in the top left
of synaptic package manager.

Adding Multimedia repository: 

A list of available repositories is available @

http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

To add a Repo in Synaptic open the repository list and 
select NEW. Select Binary (deb) Under URL add:

http://www.deb-multimedia.org

Under Distribution add your current branch. ( Jessie, Testing, Unstable )

For stock installations enter jessie

Under Sections add | main non-free |

Press OK and Refresh the package Index. 

WARNING: You may recive an error at this point. 
To correct this you need to add the multimedia PGP Key to the system.

sudo apt-get install deb-multimedia-keyring

Try refreshing the package index again. The error should be corrected. 

NOTE: Synaptic and all other package managers need to be closed before
installing new Keyring.

Install non-free codecs and other media components. ( Optional )

NOTE: These must be installed seperatly to avoid errors / conflicts.

sudo apt-get install libav-tools 

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

sudo apt-get install icedtea-plugin

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 

sudo apt-get install gecko-mediaplayer

sudo apt-get install browser-plugin-vlc

Install Linux Firmware and base packages:

sudo apt-get install gdebi gksu firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree
______________________________________________________________________________

Install Microcode for Intel Proscessors. ( Optional ) 

sudo apt-get install intel-microcode
______________________________________________________________________________

Utility Applications:

sudo apt-get install file-roller rar unrar
______________________________________________________________________________

Install Nvidia Proprietary Graphics Drivers:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig

sudo nvidia-xconfig

*** REBOOT to enable Nvidia drivers

ENABLE TESTING AND UNSTABLE REPOSITORIES. ( Optional )

ADD The following sources to your /etc/apt/sources/list

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

deb deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free


NOTE: If you have added the deb-multimedia repo, Be sure to change the 
distribution designation to match the desired branch.

EXAMPLE: 

Original: 
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org jessie main non-free

Testing:
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free

Unstable:
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org unstable main non-free
